This may be considered a spoiler for K. Eric Drexler's book Engines of Creation - The Coming Era of Nanotechnology.

Personal view on the analogy

I note that

on the one hand we have an strong attempt at prevention of copyright related theft from rich companies,
and on the other we have a suggestion for a way to experiment with extremely dangerous technology while avoiding the risk of destroying the world.
